Title: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: Star Magician on November 06, 2012, 09:00:50 AM
Now that I've finally started reading, I can start this topic AND be able to participate xD

I just started reading Sorcery Rising by Jude Fisher (Jane Johnson... can see why she has a pen name... there must be over 9000 "Jane Johnsons" lol)

Are you guys reading anything too? What do you normally enjoy reading? Are there any books you'd like to check out?

I have a goal to read the entire dragonlance series. (that's dozens of books, by the way) so far, I've read six.

A Clash of Kings, the second book in The Song of Ice and Fire.
I've heard a lot about that series. How do you like it so far?

Pretty good. Some characters get old, but that is my opinion. The TV show aint worth the watch, though. They add too much filler. All in all, it IS a good read, but it is dark and adult.

The Captain Underpants series?

What do you mean when you call it "adult"?
Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: Nyran on November 12, 2012, 06:59:58 AM
I was making a joke. My nephew is six. He's really friggen smart for his age, though, and he often complains about how he can't watch or read any of the cool stuffs, so I plan to get him the most adult and mature things possible for christmas. My brother(His father) said he would hurt me if I did so. Only prompting me to want to do it some more ^-^
Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: Star Magician on November 12, 2012, 07:08:18 AM
Oh I see. That went WAY over my head lol.

And if he is smart as you say, his dad should be a bit more open about things... I have two boy cousins who are total opposites: the older is smart and mature and the younger is difficult and impressionable. I could talk to the older one about pretty much anything, but the younger one I can't talk to at all because he doesn't like to use his brain lol.

My brother is really chill, but he's really protective of his kid. It's really weird. I try to be as awesome with him as possible. He says that, of the two of us, He's more mature. Considering the things I show and do with him(not in the messed up way) I'm inclined to agree with him.

DO NOT EVEN JOKE ABOUT GETTING "GAME OF THRONES" FOR A SIX YEAR OLD!! OMG! When I said "adult", I mean language. It can get pretty rough, but it is very realistic.

I see. I don't really consider bad language enough for an "adult" rating though... All I knew about the series was that it involved war, which I consider more "adult" than bad language. But that's just me.

When people say "adult" I think of more along the lines of 50 Shades Of Greh than violence or language (and no, I've never read it)

Good good. You were a fortunate one.

When people say "adult" I think of more along the lines of 50 Shades Of Greh than violence or language (and no, I've never read it)
Funny because 50 Shades of Gray is a very juvenile book imo lol...

But true, sex, war and serious emotional issues are what I consider "adult". Language is nothing.

The funny thing is, with most things: War, violence and all that are A O.K to show, but the second anyone mentions Sex or Language: Hide the Children. It's stupid.

Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: CHEESE4ALL on November 20, 2012, 06:14:07 PM
Alright the truth is I read A LOT. So much in fact that I blame my bad memory on it. Like a computer that has way more information than it can hold, I skip around and jump a bit. I completely
regurgitate anything useless like directions, or names, or what I ate for dinner five minutes ago.  ;)
Anywho, my point is that I read a lot and so, for a book to be called my favorite amongst the tens of thousands of other books I've gone through is quite an accomplishment. And one that is always changing as I read more.

My favorite right now is actually a series (it's only three books, don't freak out).    The first book is called The Way Of The Shadows. I highly recommend reading it.   It's violent, and gory, and hilarious in a dark way.  It makes you hate all people, and then love them again.    The only problem I have with the entire thing is the cheesy cover (no pun intended, 'cause you know, I'm Cheese ;) )   When I first saw the cover or even read the back I wasn't particularly thrilled, and almost didn't get it. But I did because I had been going through a phase where I was burning through books even more than usual and was hooked by the first page (yeah, yeah, don't judge a book by it's cover, whatever)
It's an awesome book.  Please read it.    Even if the cover looks like a crapy attempt to look like Assasin's Creed. Once again:
The Way Of The Shadows,  by Brent Weeks

Let us count the reasons Game of Thrones is adult.

It has sex (both consensual and not), war, incest, murder, language ( the biggest problem for most people for some WTF reason), crippling a little boy, forcing a 13 year old girl into marriage, spousal abuse, some homosexual characters ( I don't care, but some people...), murder, illegitimate offspring, and a perverted dwarf just to name a few. But it is well written, so I'm still reading.

Post by: CHEESE4ALL on November 22, 2012, 08:21:38 AM
Oh that reminds me.  The Way Of The Shadows has violence, language, rape, incest, prostitution, torture, more rape, and murder.

... but it has honor, and hope, and love, and amazing monsters, and magic, and humor,  and an ability completely move even the coldest of people (seriously, sad movies? Love? Death? Nope. I don't cry. I can't get into it that much emotionally, yet this book touched even me (no I didn't cry but I was really very sad))
Anyways, I feel the horrible things in this book only help to make the good things shine brighter.  And it's hilarious at the same time.  Win, win.

(But don't read this book unless your 16+   I don't wanna be held responsible by annoyed parents)

See, when you're a girl and you're a nerd: you're awesome, but if you're a guy, and you're a nerd, you get shunned, and everyone thinks your going to live with your parents until your 40. Even though I have the highest grade of anyone in my class, and am most likely to actually get a well-Paying job.  makes me seriously upset just thinking about it.>:(

 :11: One day. Anyway...

On Topic: I am very much so excited for the Hobbit! To celebrate this, I have just read through it again, and I am now in the midst of the trilogy of The Lord Of The Rings(Even if it is really mainstream) I am now on the 2nd one.

Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?

Why? Because of it's mainstreamness?
Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: CHEESE4ALL on November 22, 2012, 11:53:35 PM
I greatly enjoyed the Hobbit (the book that is), but I can never seem to get into the Lord of the Rings no matter how hard I try. I know it's an excellent story, but the style of writing-similar to that of C. S. Lewis- is not my favorite.  The Hobbit gave me some trouble the first time because I couldn't focus, but after that I was very happy I read it. I know Lord of the Rings will be the same as soon as I decide to try to read it again (last time I was in the middle of a move driving from Ohio to California. That made it a little more difficult to focus)

I can understand why you wouldn't be ecstatic for the movie, but I still plan on seeing it.

Actually, I quite liked the Lord of the Rings movies, but not enough to make me want to watch a dragged-out, box-office-whoring trilogy that could just be made into one movie. I already know the story, so I know it can be done. I'd rather not pay to see something when I already know what's going to happen too.

Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: Star Magician on November 23, 2012, 12:11:32 AM
Another thing I can't stand about movies these days is that they are just adaptations of stories that the moviemakers previously had nothing to do with. And, even when they do make their own stories, they always suck. There is a severe lack of creativity in the A/B-list movie industry. What's worse is that people eat up all of their crappy movies like it's no big deal.

Good point. I generally hate movies made after books. Especially if I read the book first.  But I still feel the need to see it, sort of the need to stare at a car accident even though it's gruesome. You just look away.

Title: Re: What are you reading now, etc.?
Post by: CHEESE4ALL on November 28, 2012, 06:04:18 AM
Define useless.  I like to read informational books about things like geology, Reflexology, history of random things (example: origami, color dye), and bugs (lots and lots of books on bugs)     But I put that knowledge to use.   I'm gonna be a entomologist (bug scientist), I collect rocks, make origami, and use pressure points.

It's not useless if it helps you achieve your dream or you can put it to something you love.

Banshee's Honor came in the mail! :65: I just need to finish Sorcery Rising first... about halfway through now.
No. I voted fantasy.
Did you know you could have voted for more than one?

Reading a book called "Chinese Science: Explorations of an Ancient Tradition", edited together by Shigeru Nakayama and Nathan Sivin. Relates to my interests as a History major, haha. It's really interesting so far, but I have yet to finish it.

Ooh, that sounds really cool.

I am reading about bugs.  Which relates to my interest in entomology.

Bugs! <3 I like them well enough~

Picked up a book called "Dead Man Walking" by Sister Helen Prejean. I'll be reading this over the weekend. I also want to finish "Warm Bodies" by Isaac Marion... Still reading that Chinese Science book, too.

I've got Xenocide by Orson Scott Card on hold at the library.  I've recently read other books in the series, including Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow of the Giant, Shadow Puppets, and Shadows in Flight.

I should probably read outside of work since I only get like 15 minutes to do so each day I'm there. I still haven't finished Wild Magic. -.-

Errr, update. I've finished Wild Magic, and I am now reading the final book of the series, The Rose of the World.

Seriously, this author likes to really torture her characters. >_>

Most do.

I'm reading a book about a man with a disease called Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP)   and evil monkeys.         And did I mention the monkeys will be the cause of end of the world?

Monkeys are never good.

Most do.
Is that so?
I don't plan on torturing the characters in my own story nearly as much... Will that mean my story will flop? D:

Monkeys are never good.
:81: You take that back!!!!

@Star:   we humans love suffering. Just look at our tv,  or our semi-previous fondess of public executions.

Bump.

I ended up finishing The Rose of the World during the summer. Now that it's over, I'm reluctant to pick up another book. Too much blood, rape, incest, war, torture, etc. in that series for me. >_>
(Banshee's Honor was excellent though.)

Guess I'll play my DS on breaks at work for now. XD

I just finished A Storm of Swords, the third book in the "Song of Ice and Fire" series. Now, I'm gonna read "A Feast for Crows".

I like making my own stories, I like stories that are evil, dark, and where evil never sleeps, which is why The Ring is probably my favorite story.

I just finished reading The Old Man and the Sea. I forgot that I loved Hemingway, even though I think most people don't.

Will probably start on Bradbury's The October Country, even though I usually read Dandelion Wine about this time of year.

I've read the Old Man and the Sea as well, and I didn't like it...
It's not that I dislike Hemingway though. I just dislike realism.

My boyfriend dared an author on twitter, who he thought was a spam bot to sell more books, to do something and he would buy her books, and now we're reading her books. They're really great.  The first one is called  Fade to Black, by LT Vargus and Tim McBain.

Got me a book for the first time in a year and a half. Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I don't plan on reading it any time soon though, I need to finish my two handheld games first lol...

Jane Eyre.   It's... not poorly written.... Actually, I'm pretty impressed with it. Not my usual genre at all, but I really like it.  And that's after hating it because of my mother forcing me to see each and every version of the movie. There's a LOT, and all but the last are TERRIBLE.

Teachings of Buddha. It's alright, don't like it as much as I thought I would. Still really early in though.

That's next on my list actually. I've got a Quran too, so I've got plenty of scripture to get through.
Really though, I've been really wanting to re-read Flowers for Algernon.
(I don't have a copy though, so Holy Books Ho~!)

I'm actually not sure what I'll be reading next.  I'm up to date on all of Jim Butcher's works, I've read all of the Cosmere books, and have finished the Deeds of Paksennarian... I guess I'll be checking to see if there's any extended works in the Paks series.
