NO.  This kind of system can and WILL be abused to hell, trust me.  The GSHC tried to do something like it, and now it's devolved into "If you don't like someone, Rep-bomb them".  After I got an admin fired for abuse of power there, I went from +80 rep, to -270 or so.  The webmaster had to step in and try and fix it, but I'm still down to about -30 after that.  There's still some people bitter at me over there, so if I ever do anything that, according to them, "crosses the line" such as reporting them when they break the rules (like any good girl should), I tend to get -5 or so at a time.

Instead, IF you decide to do something, make it a "Like system" or "thank system".

I have to agree with Rolina with her points. Stay with upvotes, if you even want a system like this. But, would there be limits on how many times someone can upvote people per day?

Not a bad idea with the Up Vote system. I will look into this tomorrow or after tomorrow at latest.

There's two approaches I've seen to it:  One for "Liking" the post, the other for "thanking" the post.  I suppose just pick the one that you think is the better fit for the forums.

What do you mean about thanking the post?

Exactly what it says on the tin.  Posts come with an option to thank the poster for their post.  If you found it helpful or something, you'd thank the user.

Could be interesting. I like the idea.

The thanking system is better suited to Amazon or sites where questions are answered rather than sites like TLW where it's mostly just conversation and RP's.

I couldn't care less really. I just feel I should give my opinion. It'd make no difference to me on whether or not the change occurs.

Same. I usually up-vote stupid posts anyway XD

One use for an upvote system is for approving of posts without actually posting in there. For discussions (and even arguments), it can help legitimize the opinions of some peeps. Maybe it's good for people who like to lurk?

Hmm. That would be useful for a few members. I like it, but I don't like the down arrow. I think it will bring too much negativity.
Title: Re: An upvote/downvote system?
Post by: Rolina on February 14, 2013, 04:15:10 AM
It brings spiteful action.  People will start downvoting in retaliation to things they don't like.  For example, let's say I got an admin fired.  Well, said admin was bitter, made an alt account, and used it to spam the downvote so that I was several hundred rep negative.

No, I'm not talking recent events.  I'm saying exactly what happened at the GSHC last April.  The system in use at the GSHC is abused to hell and back, and admin intervention to stop that abuse has only had limited success.  If you say something that someone doesn't like, they won't downvote that one post - they'll downvote every post in the thread you made.  It happened recently when I dared to ask people if they wanted to evolve the purpose of the GSHC in order to actually get some activity in the place.  Apparently, I was wrong to want the place lively.

Oh, I would like to ask something. Would the names of members who chose to upvote be made public somehow? I'm neither for or against this, but I'm curious about what y'all think.

I personally see no problem with it.  I don't see why you'd wanna stay hidden for liking/thanking something, only if you were downvoting would I think you'd want to hide, for fear of retribution.

:isaac: I have enabled the Karma Mod in the fourm. I have set it up so that members should be only able to upvote. Since all options are shown for an admin, I will need help on testing out the permissions. Please test out the permissions on Newbie Isaac (http://goldensunforums.thelostwaters.com/index.php?action=profile;u=12), my test puppet.  :61:

I smote Newbie Isaac because I could. I'm sorry, but it's in the name of science.

Oh no... you added a downvote.

This won't end well.

There has to be more security in this. A guy can summon up random accounts and continually smite a dude

P.S. smited newb Isaac because he is a bot

If that happens, we'll just get rid of it. No biggy.

Looks like you can affect someone's karma more than once in a post, after a 1 hour waiting period. I'm not sure if I approve of that, personally. :S Then again, I trust that people here are responsible.
Title: Re: An upvote/downvote system?

You can also just go up and down a single topic and either applaud or smite them.

So why would you go around applauding them?  ...well, you won't.  Get someone mad, and they'll start smiting as many of your posts as they can.  They don't need multiple accounts when you have multiple posts to punish.

Yes, I understand people may abuse it. Like I said, we can always remove it.

Just a quick update before heading off. I have fixed the permissions. You can only [applause] users once an hour.

Well it looks like Sea took of the smite option, so we'll see how this goes.
Title: Re: An upvote/downvote system?
Post by: Rolina on February 17, 2013, 04:05:56 AM
Ah, this is much better.  No risk of nightmares like at the GSHC anymore.

And, yeah... never underestimate the spite people can have.  We didn't think anything of the up and downvoting until people began trying to punish others with the system.  Having upvotes and only upvotes not only keeps things rather positive, you don't have people abusing stuff just to be mean.

Is it wrong I upvote people when one of their posts make me smile?
Title: Re: An upvote/downvote system?
Post by: Rolina on February 17, 2013, 04:46:45 AM
No, but it's wrong to downvote one person several times when only one of their posts makes you upset.  Or none... it could be a PM or something...

Well, it certainly got him a Pity-Like.

He also completely ignored his friend Nyran and his then-2 Karma. If this were Ninja Gaiden Sigma, I'd be screwed. Lol.

I don't get it.

A two-way vote system capable of tracking voting habits could single out problematic users and "troll" accounts.  (Example: A user who goes through another user's history to down vote every comment they ever made is obviously up to no good.)  Zero would be the lowest number to avoid abuse of the system before and after the user is dealt with.
                                                                                        :99:
Title: Re: An upvote/downvote system?
Post by: Rolina on July 28, 2013, 07:44:52 AM
That doesn't stop the "punish" problem.  When someone does something to draw the ire of another, they'll not simply downvote the problematic post, they'll downvote several of their posts.  Furthermore, if they can tell that said person downvoted another post, they'll upvote it to cancel it out.

Downvoting shouldn't be a thing - period.  The human tendency to abuse and game the system out of spite is too great - I've never seen it not abused when both are an option.

I've never seen it not abused when both are an option.

What about the two-way star system used on GSAR?  (minimum of zero stars; maximum of five stars)  They have a short vote range system with a floor and a ceiling plus they only allow one vote per user.  (This is used for profiles, not post.)

We don't really have enough active users to justify a "1 vote per user" system. In all honestly what few people we have remaining are already such a tight community that it boggles the mind as to why any form of post-voting system is wanted or necessary.
Title: Re: An upvote/downvote system?
Post by: Rolina on July 28, 2013, 04:00:55 PM
That's not abusable without alt-accounting, which will get you banned.  GSAR has a like system, which only allows upvotes.  Between that and the star system, there's no way to "Punish" a person by gaming a system, not without getting banned yourself.
