Title: Name changes
Post by: Merc on May 20, 2013, 03:35:23 PM
Quote from: Rolina
See?  It's not just me!  There should be a rule or something.  Pick a name, make sure you want it, and now you can't change it for six months.  Or something like that.

Since this line of discussion was promptly shut down for being off topic, I decided to bring it up in a more fitting context. I know that several others here can get really annoyed by this hyperactive name changing, and it also makes it difficult for old members to come back, making them have to decipher who's who.

I agree. I believe everyone who wants to change their name should post here first, telling everyone what the new name is. That way people know who's who.

Not just that - you should be required to stick with your choice.  We can't just have people changing them willy nilly.  The GSHC uses a six month policy IIRC, so I went with that.  When you first join, you get one free one in case you didn't like it or it had some extra stuff you found out you didn't need (why be called John42438 when you can simply be called John?), but after that first chnage, you're locked in for six months.  Only after that six months can you change it again, and the time is determined by the timestamp on the admin's name change confirmation in this thead.

I'd make it three (3) months just because six (6) months is a drastic change from what is already in place.

I agree. Maybe we can build it up to 6, but there would be problems if we went from everybody changing their names all the time to only once every 6 months.

I think Holidays such as April 1st an October 31st should be exempt from this

Just throwing it out there, I really don't care

I don't see the harm in this, but it also probably couldn't happen because of time limitations.

I like the Idea of 3 months.

Thats what I always do. I don't change it every freaking month.

I've kept Luxaria for 5 months (including the times when it had parentheses)

I kept Arkane a long time, considering my other repeated changes. Sticking with Aether for a while cuz I have no regrets with this name. Glad I found something I like enough

I like what Ivan does.  He usually warns you somehow in parentheses until you're used to it.   That's fine with me.   Name changes can be confusing, but I don't mind them.  They mix things up.  Even though, truthfully, Ivan and Aether have gotten mixed up for me in the past (seriously I'm not sure which is which from the first two names you guys had when I first joined here. Sorry :)) )

(Side note: who's Russia?)

L/Kira/Vegeta/Italy/Asura. (Those are all of his names that I can remember.)

Wait, so Russia is Kira?  No wonder he irks me.

Wait... he's... but....   Normally I can tell who someone is by... Seriously?  Seriously?    Grrrrrrr.

This is why the no-change rule makes sense.  So people can keep track of who is who, particularly the ones that can't sit still for a full week.

Yes, well if this behaviour starts to thoroughly annoy people enough, you will 'become one' with a permanent ban.

Are you sure this wasn't just our successful plan all along? (Dang it, bringing out the onion page makes the site crash.)

To be honest, I was actually kinda happy to see a critical review on Golden Sun, though I had wished it was more in-depth like my reply to it.  But now that I know that Russia's Kira, it makes me feel like I was trolled.

Which probably explains his PM to me after I posted.  All he really had was "HAHAHAHAHA". :/

Ich glaube nicht an Bewertungen troll, ziehe ich es vor zu bleiben kurz und einfach mit diesem

If you judge reviews based on the people who did them, you don't have the right to critique anything........anything

Some reviews aren't reviews at all.  They're meant to provoke and raise the ire of a community.  Trash talking golden sun on a golden sun community, for example, is not an example of a solid review - it's an example of trolling.  You need to be more in depth, discuss the good and the bad.  Don't relish over it like some slathering fanboy, but don't just flat out call it trash and ignore all the good that went in it as well.

My first name was Shine (actually technically it was Earth Master, but I changed it the first thing when I realized There were Sol and Luna Clans.) for about 4 months

Then it was Dusk. for another 4

Then it was Shine Again. For 2

Then it was Vaati for a month

Then Axel for a month

Luxaria for 5

Ivan for 4 (Corresponding with the four months of Luxaria)

I don't really like changing names anymore. I'll do it once in a while, but I have one I really like.

I wasn't annoyed with Russia about the name change thing.   Actually he kind of amused me a moment ago.   And calm down you two.

@Ivan.    Darn.  I was thinking Aether was Vaati.  I wasn't sure but that was where I was leaning.
Again, I don't mind the name changes so long as there's some way to distinguish it.  For instance Ivan's ().      That way works for me.

I'm still a Kamen Rider.

All I want is a topic where someon can say like "I'm gonna be changing to Scorpio Z Kai in a bit. Just a heads up," for example.

I don't see why nobody has  made a thread for it yet. Just put it in the spam section until something else gets updated or whatever.

Signatures and avatars are fine with changing.  It's the name that matters here.  Please don't trivialize this with strawman points.
Title: Re: Name changes
Post by: Ivan Strider on May 27, 2013, 10:02:36 PM
(Strawman points?)

ANYWAY...

There should be a log on our profile that shows what names we have used before. That would be even better.
Title: Re: Name changes
Post by: Rolina on May 28, 2013, 02:21:32 AM
Even then, there should be a limit.  3 months was mentioned earlier, and while I'm cool with it, I'm still more a fan of half a year.  Constantly changing stuff gets confusing, as we've seen in this thread.  While changing your avatar and signature is fine (akin to changing clothes in real life), changing your name shouldn't be done trivially (again, as in real life), as this is what people know you by.  More than your avi or siggy, this is your identity.  As such, changing it willy nilly tends to cause problems.

Okay then I should just use my real name?

Nah, but Yes I do agree. sometimes I am actually gone a while and I come back and I don't know who anybody is anymore! It confuses the sh** out of me. That is why I am not really going to change my name.

I'll pick three names and I'll alternate between them.

I have A better Idea!

First, 3 month rule.

Next a 3 name rule. There can only be three names that you can choose from and will be asked for you to make the names when you first make your account or for veterans who are already here if/when that happens, are asked first thing when they log in.

It will then be locked in and every three months you may choose which of the three names to use and then you cannot change it again until the next 3 months.

First GREAT Idea I have actually thought of all year!!!!! :D I'm so happy.

I dunno about the three names rule.  That's a lot more restrictive than my six month rule idea if you ask me - it limits your freedom to name yourself, and I can honestly say that I know nobody who hasn't had their interests evolve over the course of six months or so.

I say somewhere between 3 and 6, but you are allowed any name.

4 months

That a third of the year
Title: Re: Name changes

I agree now that I think about it. 5-6 would be more ideal.
Title: Re: Name changes

I like the 3-4 month rule.  But I agree with Rolina with limiting the number of names.  Too restricting, and then you find yourself, at a later date, wishing you had chosen something else.  Might as well have no name changes at all.

Looks like L changed his name again.  This is the reason I want this in place - to prevent rapid name changes like that.

When he keeps it to countries you know exactly who he is.  And he already said he was done changing his username for awhile.

Well, these are good suggestions, and I agree with a time restriction on changing ones' name. However, Sea is the only one who can make changes. Nothing will become concrete until he returns.
