Title: Staff and Moderation/Empty Members
Post by: Tetsu on June 28, 2015, 09:31:55 PM
STAFF AND MODERATION
*That's in the second portion of my post.

BEFORE I BEGIN:
Please note that I am in no way trying to bash The Sea King, n3ptune_123, Halcyonic Legend, or Maegra because they're all freakin' awesome. Please bear in mind this is nothing more than constructive criticism.

I'm seeing no active staff. If we look at our memberlist, the last time The Sea King was active was 5/24/15 (over a month ago), n3ptune_123 was last active on 3/1/15 (almost four months ago), Halcyonic Legend was last active on 3/31/15 (Almost three months ago) and Maegra was last online on 5/22/ (over a month ago). Staff Members need to be active on The Lost Waters. We need moderators that are able to be active because administrators and moderators need to be keeping an eye on the empty members* that appear here and the memberlist needs to be cleaned up. Additionally, it looks better on the forum if the staff is reliably online! Just throwing this out there.

I'm willing to fully return to TLW, but only if we can get more active administrators and moderators.

EMPTY MEMBERS

I've not been on in a long time, but I've not seen much change here. Still few members that are active, but a plethora of empty accounts. When I say "empty account," I'm talking about these spam accounts or accounts where people make an account but fail to post. At a first glance, people are like "Wow, there are a lot of people here!" God forbid they go into the Memberlist and see how many of those have 0-5 posts.

All these empty accounts look terrible for any kind of forum. We need to clean up the Memberlist and start keeping it clean. The site is in bad shape, guys. If we get a reliable staff, we can clean this up real quick. The issue is quite simple: Getting contact with Sea. I am unsure if we are able to do so; however, we need to get this done.

IN A NUTSHELL
Guys, we gotta get the site active and clean of freakin' false members and empty accounts. My suggestion is quite simple: 7 days to post at least 2 times in 3 different sections or the account is deleted. I know it is harsh, but we have so many spambots and so many empty members. If we cannot get a larger and more active staff, then I will not come back. I'm sorry for being harsh/cruel/what have you, but this is something that is necessary.

Any thoughts?

I would gladly dispose of spam bot accounts if given the authority. Just sayin'

I can't really blame the mods for not moderating a forum that has like 6 regular users though...

I feel you man, I'd volunteer but I have no experience or knowledge of what goes into being a mod.
Real life seems to have gotten in the way of all the staff being active (a majority of the members too for that matter), and those that do hang around here behave well enough so there's little reason to stop by other than to smite what's been reported.
Though, I guess that's a big part of the problem itself. There seems to be zero expectation of new members.
Which is understandable given the state of Golden Sun as a series, but hey things could actually make a turn for the better soon.
If the rumours end up being true and Isaac gets into Smash Bros we might get a renaissance, look at the explosion of FE popularity in the west thanks to Melee.

I'm not exactly optimistic, but maybe Sea will show back up soon and change the tides.

I'd probably come on more as a mod, but post less.   I agree with most of that, but for that post minimum. Many of our members leave for a period only to come back.  If after a month their account was gone, that'd severely drop how many would ever come back. But 6 months to a year of no posting? Or just spambots? Definitely time to boot 'em out.

I don't like the idea of booting people who used to post here, even if they haven't done so in years. Remember, Rhenchel20 (now known by Nightwing) came back briefly after 3 years of absence, so others could potentially follow suit. Deleting people also deletes all of their old posts, so I can't support that.

/\ Good point.  Maybe just start with empty accounts and spambots.

:42: Hello, everyone. It is good to see you all.

It seems that I have returned. I do not know if this return will be one of my "visits" or if it will be longer. Anyway, I have checked my email and saw that I have received a PM.

'm seeing no active staff. I agree that the staff (myself included) should be more active. Although, it is not mandatory. I have not been active due to the flu and exams. Likewise, the other moderators may have not enough free time to be active. Anyway, I shall try once again to come here more often.

EMPTY MEMBERS My suggestion is quite simple: 7 days to post at least 2 times in 3 different sections or the account is deleted. I know it is harsh, but we have so many spambots and so many empty members.
I agree with StarMagician, that limit is too high, and old members return to the forum from time to time. However, I would delete empty members & spambots if there was an automatic way to do so. If anyone finds a spambot or empty member, the most reliable way to way to get rid of them is by reporting. Anyway, I shall check if there is another solution in the admin control or a mod later on today or tomorrow.

EDIT:
After googling, I found a way to deal with the 0 post members. The option was hidden under search for members. I searched for members that had 0 posts. 54 pages of members with 0 posts deleted :D   :66:

Getting contact with Sea. I am unsure if we are able to do so; however, we need to get this done.
The most reliable way of contacting me is by PM or EMAIL (theseaking@thelostwaters.com). I check my email every few days or so.

Mobile Support
Anyway, in other news, I have completed installing the mobile version mod. However, it can only be used if members select the SMF Default Theme - Curve theme in their profile control. The mod is incompatible with the other themes.
Here is a quick link the the profile control: Link (http://goldensunforums.thelostwaters.com/index.php?action=profile;area=theme)

I have attached a preview to this post as well.

Sea.~

Good to Sea you back.  ;)

The members list looks much cleaner now; I love it. I think there are still some bot accounts left, so I may send a report your way if they are suspicious.

And mobile support! .... Yay! (I don't use mobile, but it's still good :thumbup1: )

What about the ones with only 1 or 2 ?

Mobile update, noice. Don't most come here through their phones ? (While on the toilet too. I'm just making assumptions.)
(I don't, I don't even have a phone. Wonder if it'll help for the times when I can only visit with my 3ds. I'll check sometime soon.)

You know, honestly, I wouldn't even care if they shirked all their duties but hung around a little more.
I love all the staff, they're cool dudes.

Well, I guess except Sea. Get to work lazy bones Mr. Admin, sir. Uh... please.
Can't say I know him enough to love him, but he's a nice dude and he hasn't cut himself off of this place.
(Not saying he's not a cool dude, that's just how this ended up being structured.)   :31:
I've just always happened to be gone when he comes around. (Does he wait for me to leave before he posts ? Are we secretly the same guy ?)

I use my Wii U more than anything else. :55: On the toilet too, actually.

Sea, I will help however I can. I know I am not the most active, but that's because I doubt there'd be a great level change.

I can come back as a mod and help sweep up the topics and stuff. there are some abandoned threads that need to get out. this place is quite littered with abandoned places. I think making a fresh, clean slate would make the site a lot more appealing. Meaning, there is information that could be talked about that hasn't been brought up before! but everything has been mentioned it seems like. We need new systems. Posting Systems, clan systems, mod systems, forum systems. Everything. We need some order back. most of the stuff shown was posted last year or the year before. We need to make new things and clean out some old things. Make contests and give out actually prizes (like my musical compositions for example). Unfortunately, most of the mods aren't here and can't do anything. Making a complete reset will help get things in order and give active members the ability to make things better.

Hrk. A complete reset, as I am sure you are aware, will be costly. Additionally, it will require an incredible amount of time. I honestly would not push for a reset.

If someone would like to replace me, take it up with Sea. I'm all for it. I don't have extra time for Internet anymore. :-(

I'm more than willing to step up, just not at this moment. I'm moving to an apartment in August. As soon as I'm moved in, I can take the position.

I'm in favor of Lunor once he gets settled.
I think Star would make a great candidate too.
Though I guess it's kind of rude to volunteer someone else.  :78:

(People are showing back up ! Have the tides begun to change ?)

 :16: Well... pretty much yeah.

I have no experience or knowledge of what goes into being a mod.
I just kind of assumed everyone but me was capable. Now I feel silly. :14:

I would probably be the laziest mod ever.

My move is early August.
I'm done with my internship the second week of August.
But as I said, I don't care, take it up with Sea.
